Please take the time to read the three different kinds of patterns for these handwarmers. (Please use the link for the Google Document Version for all the different patterns in one) I know sometimes you don’t have double pointed or circular needles, (they are expensive, but if you go to eBay you can get an entire set of bamboo needles, each a set of five needles, from sizes 0-15 for $14.99, that’s what I did) I had the same problem before I got them, and I couldn’t find a good pattern for fingerless gloves, handwarmers or otherwise. I have made a separate pattern for knitting them flat, (with or without the shaping), in the round with shaping, (decreases) and in the round without the shaping. The pictures are with shaping knitted in the round on double pointed needles.

::Instructions for the Handwarmers in the Picture::
Cast on 42 stitches. I used long tail cast on. Divide them between needles. Join to knit in the round. Knit in stockinette until piece measures 3 inches from cast on. This is where the decreasing begins. If you don’t want decreases to shape to your arm you can skip this part and just knit the piece until it measures 5 inches from cast on or your desired length. Then just skip to the thumb gusset.

-Decreasing-
Knit 11, k2tog, knit 21, k2tog, knit to end of round. (40 sts.)
Knit 3 rounds
Knit 10, k2tog, knit 20, k2tog, knit to end of round. (38 sts.)
Knit 3 rounds.
Knit 9, k2tog, knit 19, k2tog, knit to end of round. (36 sts.)

If you wish to make it longer you can just continue in this manner, but I recommend you cast on more stitches if you are going to make it much longer because it may be too skinny to fit correctly. I would say that for every 4 rounds that you add cast on an extra 2 stitches. That way you can decrease those 2 stitches and still have the same amount as the pattern. Hopefully I didn’t confuse you with that. If I did, please contact me for any help you need. The thumb gusset and finishing takes about 4 inches.

::Now we start on the thumb gusset::`
First, you need to set it up -
Knit 19, place marker, knit 1, place marker, knit to end
Now we begin the increasing for the thumb gusset -
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 1, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Slipping markers, knit all stitches.
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 3, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Slipping markers, knit all stitches
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 5, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Slipping markers, knit all stitches.
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 7, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Slipping markers, knit all stitches.
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 9, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round
Slipping markers, knit all stitches.
Knit to marker, slip marker, make one right, knit 11, make one left, slip marker, knit to end of round.
You should have a total of 47 stitches in your round, including 13 thumb gusset stitches between your markers. If you have a smaller or larger thumb, you can add on more here to make the thumb bigger or smaller. Just continue in the same manner until you have it the desired size.
Slip your markers one more time, knitting all stitches.
Knit to first marker, remove it, place all 13 stitches between your markers onto waste yarn or stitch holders. If you use a tapestry needle this is a lot easier, and I recommend the waste yarn so it can flex and move as you knit the rest of the piece. Cast on one stitch using backwards loop cast on, to make up for the one stitch you used for the thumb gusset. Remove your other stitch marker and knit to the end of round. Be sure to stitch the stitches that come together on each side of the thumb gusset stitches very tightly to keep it from spreading apart.
Knit until piece measures 1 ½ inches from the top of the thumb gusset. (where you put your 13 stitches on waste yarn.) If you want the fingers shorter or longer do so here. Bind off with one size larger needle.

Pick up the 13 gusset stitches and 6 more on the palm for a total of 19 stitches. (one on each side and 4 at the top is how I did it. Do what you think to make it look good and have no holes.) Knit it about 2 ½ inches from where you started your thumb gusset,(meaning the part of the pattern where you set up the thumb gusset) or longer or shorter if you wish. Bind off with one size larger needle.
